We've moved!
Mikel and I have moved our studio to The Waterfall Building near Granville Island. I felt that after four years operating out of our previous studio in Gastown, we had run our course with that location as the neighborhood continued to display more disparity between extreme wealth and extreme desperation in poverty.
More high end condos, clothing and furniture stores kept opening amidst the blatant drug abuse, property theft and underlying violence that permeated that historic neighborhood.
In the 25 years I've lived in Vancouver, Gastown has always been a neighborhood in transition as property development moved in and poverty receded. But the crime that accompanies poverty would push back and property development would falter and recede, only to make another push years later with new condos and new restaurants. New tenants would then get sick of getting their cars broken in to and would eventually move on to Yaletown or Coal Harbor and the cycle continued so on and so on.
As long as the flop house hotels on Hastings Street remain, Gastown will always be a cultural battleground.
Our old studio on Water Street was situated on the front lines of this culture war. Our studio was a million dollar condo with hardwood floors, exposed brick and epic views of the ocean and mountains. But set foot outside the building and you couldn't walk two blocks for coffee without being aggressively panhandled or just generally harassed by one of the local drug addicted denizens.
Inevitably Mikel and I decided that it would be best to move our operation to another area of the city where we could tattoo in peaceable enjoyment and our clients would feel completely safe and comfortable arriving for their tattoo appointment.
Our new studio, situated only steps away from Granville Island is absolutely lovely and wonderfully convenient for us and for our customers. There's a bus stop right out front and ample parking in one of the several lots surrounding our building, including parking on the defunct CP Rail line that runs along side our suite.
The new studio is a loft style room with our waiting parlor on the entry level and the tattoo work stations on the balcony above. Mikel's loft overlooks the central room and my tattoo area has sliding glass doors that open up to a large patio with views on to the Burrard Street Bridge and the North Shore mountains.
I've even set up a nice patio table and chairs so my clients and I can take a break during a tattoo for a drink and a snack while enjoying the outside air. It's really quite posh.
The new studio sits facing the courtyard of the Waterfall Building, so unlike that our previous location there's no intercom or elevator rides, just a quick flight of stairs to the mezzanine level and you can open our door and walk right in.
As with our previous location, we're still a 100% custom tattoo studio, with all tattoos and consultations done by invitation and appointment only.
I'm now taking consultations for new tattoos at the new spot. Please don't hesitate to
contact me and I'll be happy to invite you down to our new digs to chat about your tattoo ideas.
